It seems like forever ago that Stephanie and Alex contacted me saying that they were eloping in Iceland and were looking for a photographer to take along for the ride. To say that I jumped at the opportunity would be an understatement! Iceland is PARADISE (for those of us who love cold climates 😉 ) and there was nooooo way I could pass that up!
We met back in March for their engagement photos (with their three dogs in tow!) and hiked in to a frozen lake high in the mountains. I knew right away that this trip was going to be nothing short of incredible!
I book destination elopements as alllllllll day events which gives us as much time as we want to go explore. These guys made use of all that time (and I’m SO glad they did!). We started bright and early with their first look at Bruarfoss waterfall which involved hoofing it through sloppy, wet mud to get to the site. When we started the sun was shining and a rainbow was blazing across the sky – but that changed pretty fast! Fortunately for us, Steph and I both LOVE moody weather!
From Bruarfoss we headed over to the black beach at Vik (stopping for hot dogs along the way) where they said their vows inside an itty bitty alcove on a quiet end of the beach. It was PERFECTION. Even with all the tourists around we were able to find some solitude.
From Vik we headed off to find some lava fields and, while we did find them, we only got a couple shots before deciding to high-tail it up to Jokulsarlon for a visit to the Diamond Beach. It was a two hour drive and already late in the day – we were racing the sun!
It was pouring rain when we made it to the ice beach but these guys were total troopers. Not only did they get out of the car, they asked to get IN that freezing cold water. Go big or go home, right?!
We all ended the day soaking wet, freezing cold, and SO SO happy!!
Eloping in Iceland is all sorts of magic and I hope to return soon (hint hint …) to capture more of this beautiful, harsh, rugged place and the people who love to visit it. This was just the tip of the iceberg (pun intended?) and I have SO many more ideas on places to elope in Iceland. I don’t think I could ever get enough of this country.
Here are some photos from their day. Enjoy!
It was a crazy, long, AMAZING day! We spent at least 9 hours just driving around the island, were nailed by countless sneaker waves (I learned this phrase in Iceland and will never stop using it!), drank a few beers, ate some hot dogs, and had an incredible time. As far aw I’m concerned, this is the ONLY way to do destination elopements!!
We were lucky to be joined on this trip by the incredible Dave of Basecamp Visual. He’s awesome. Check him out!
